What is BIM and What is not BIM - Building Information Modeling Software's
We have been hearing BIM BIM & BIM everywhere and that too from 360 degrees. The well established acronym BIM stands for Building Information Modelling in the AECO industry and its scope is extensive present as well as in near future . There were many countries already which implemented ,seen and experienced the impact of BIM. Of Course developed countries have already done most of the research and benefited as well as they did BIM as mandatory for the projects.
Professionals and researchers have shown interest towards BIM and have been developing definite standards such as ways to complete the projects within targets.
Today we will first try to understand first What is not BIM first and then we will move towards what actually BIM is .
We often hear “Process” as a keyword. Yes ! but this is not a simple method to do something in the construction industry . It is a well established ,planned and standard process.
I recently also saw some polls in LinkedIn that BIM is mainly for 1. Architects 2. Designers 3. Engineers etc . And who can use BIM ?
Of Course there are various understandings about it also. But the actual truth is completely different that BIM is applicable and anybody/ any project can use BIM.
Presently the AECO industry is adopting and implementing BIM very much. Hence we can assume that it is very helpful to Architects ,Civil ,Structural engineers, landscape ,land surveying, Highways ,Marine ,Plants and Machinery etc. As well as to Smart cities and its architecture ,Tunnelling projects and energy utilities etc.
I guess the above information is enough to state that BIM is applicable to maximum any kind of construction projects.
Another misunderstanding among so many undergraduate students and freshers is that “BIM is all about many different software's” , NO !. Of Course BIM makes use of many software's but BIM is not at all only a software.
What is not BIM to What is BIM
Having the file that works in BIM such as Revit and Navisworks only doesn’t mean that we are using BIM. Managing the workflow is a central aspect of BIM. BIM is not CAD ,YES! We may produce geometric representation of assets through CAD but that is not fully sufficient, hence that is insufficient. The CAD involvement is more stationary. Isn’t it ? Once we do work in CAD and if we export 2D drawings then Done.
Where as BIM model can be used any time and can be used any time and can be simultaneously shared with many people or what have you been in use at each level of construction. So there are different tools for specific purposes.
Process
We have been using one keyword “Process ” YES ! This process is available in ISO 19650- 1 & 2(I have studied this ,I have awareness only but not in depth practical or implementation knowledge. So I am not going to talk about this).
Now come to the definitions of BIM which are given by some pioneers, institutions and international organisations .
WIKIPEDIA
Building information modeling (BIM) is a process supported by various tools, technologies and contracts involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. Building information models (BIMs) are computer files (often but not always in proprietary formats and containing proprietary data) which can be extracted, exchanged or networked to support decision-making regarding a built asset.
US - National BIM Standard defined BIM as
"a product or intelligent digital representation of data about a capital facility"
"a collaborative process which covers business drivers , automated process capabilities, and open information standards"
"a facility life cycle management tool of well understood information exchanges , workflows and procedures."
AND
BIM or Building Information Modelling is a process for creating and managing information on a construction project across the project lifecycle. ... Through BIM, the UK construction industry is undergoing its very own digital revolution. BIM is a way of working.
The explicit definition given by Autodesk
“Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a process that begins with creating an intelligent 3D design model and then uses that model to facilitate more efficient design and documentation, better coordination, simulation and visualization.
BIM can help owners and service providers improve how buildings and infrastructure are planned ,designed ,built and managed.”
Like above there are many different definitions with the same theme and for different purposes.
Upon studying all above I hope you got an idea and some understanding now.
In the market there are multiple software's which are useful to implement BIM such as some Authoring ,Collaboration and Viewing tools.
Such as
- REVIT (Autodesk)
- ARCHICAD (Graphisoft)
- Allplan (Nemetschek)
- AECOSIM
- Vectorworks
- Rhino
- Catia
- Solidworks
- BIM 360
- Trimble Connect
- Allplan bimplus
- BIMsight
- dRofus
- BIMx
- BIM Sight
- Dalux etc
Not only these ,there are many around the world but these softwares are attracting the people in the industry.
For the more benefit of several and individual disciplines also there are softwares, such as
