Fundamentals Of CAD And BIM, Evolution Of CAD To BIM

Smile like beautiful sunshine😇. I realized that To accelerate our journey in the AEC Industry (BIM era) Software/Tools are very important. I started working on CAD MEP, Revit & NavisWorks(of course there are many but for now). In fact, to get hands-on experience and to add our creativity/value, it requires a lot more practice, to practice needs time. This time, I decided to focus on the basics/fundamentals behind BIM and how it evolved through these software/tools. There is no technology which is developed overnight, everything developed over a period of time.

Everything started with fundamental knowledge and tools only. The basic idea of BIM started long back in 1975(surprise). The definition of BIM has been changing with time and industry use cases. In every definition, we can find some particular keywords. We are able to talk theoretically, and easily about BIM, applications and advantages in the industry. But I realized and tried to know about its Basics, Tools and How it has evolved.

You tell me BIM is a Revolution or Evolution?

Obviously, Evolution only right.

Let's Start...!

After going through some basics and practicing tools, with my level of understanding and maturity, I got an idea that there are many software tools which are supporting BIM. In the AEC industry eighter, it is related to design or work execution at sites TOOLS are WEAPONS. Without the help of tools, we can't get the information/deliverables/productivity.

It is very important to understand the differences between a CAD model and a BIM model.

CAD to BIM

  •  I would like to tell you that BIM is not a suddenly emerged master technology but the road from CAD to BIM is carrying many developments.
  • In the late ’80s, due to the advancement of computer graphics, the AEC industry started to adopt 2D CAD to replace hand drawing for creating engineering drawings.
  • The fundamental 2D representation of engineering information remained the same but only the tool was changed to 2D CAD software on a computer.
  • So, we can say what 2D CAD did was just a digitization of engineering drawings.
  • Later on, when 3D CAD was introduced, an architect was able to use it as a design tool to express his or her design ideas directly in a virtual 3D space.
  • A 3D CAD model is just a combination of geometric entities such as points, lines, and faces. Unless these entities are grouped and specifically defined, the computer has no idea what the combination of these geometric entities or objects really represents in the real world.
  • But for a BIM model, is composed of predefined object components that correspond to real-world objects.

What we have in the CAD model

In a building, we have beams, columns, floors, windows, doors, etc. In the CAD model of the building, only geometric face or surface entities are used to construct the geometry of all these beams, columns, floors, windows, and doors.

What we have in the BIM model

In the BIM model, we actually have BIM objects in the digital model that correspond to the beam, column, floor, window, and door objects in the physical world. We just use those predefined objects to construct a building model in the computer. In this way, the computer can understand the components or objects the model has. So, the computer can automatically calculate and report the quantities of all these objects for us. Also, we may have information attached to these 3D geometric objects. For example, the colours and the materials used for these objects.

So, a BIM model is more than a CAD model a BIM model usually looks very similar to a 3D CAD model.

The key difference is the information attached to the model components and used by the object-oriented modelling approach.

(I am curious, and I love this, getting knowledge and sharing gives me Happiness. So, a lot more info/knowledge WE will try to share further)

I wish a bright future ahead to ALL!
